Whispers of War

Can you hear them? If you listen carefully you can. They are all around us.

These subtle whispers of war.

When people become afraid, I mean really afraid to the point of naked fear replacing any semblance of logical self-determination, then an almost intuitive rush toward the safety of numbers and like-mindedness occurs, a herd mentality that panics us, where we run together at the fist hint that things are completely out of hand and that there is no solution other than grouping together in a circle with horns pointing outward.

When people become afraid, they clan up. That is, they group together in clans or nations for mutual security, bonded together by a self perpetuating religious, political, national and/or racial cohesiveness.

When this happens to a country, and it is happening presently to countries all over the world, all civility and dignity succumbs to measures resulting from extreme panic. Usually all borders are closed, intense nationalism raises its ugly head, vast amounts of money are spent on defense and weapons in deference to any other domestic priority, all restrictions and regulations are removed from the private sector so that they can make as much money as possible for the war machine, and anyone not agreeing to these "patriotic" interests is considered a traitor.

Take a good look at America and Germany right now, or China and Japan. America; losing its economic edge and wanting to get its mojo back. Germany; wanting to flex its economic muscles again, feeling restrained by the economic absurdity of the EU. China; wanting to dominate the world stage. While Japan waits in great fear for insane North Korea, China's puppet, to attack with nuclear weapons. And all the while Japan worries about America as well, Japan's security blanket, which may not have the wherewithal to back Japan up.

What choice does Japan, and all the other Asian countries, have but to develop their own nuclear weapons for their own defense? And who will stop them? Who will stop the middle East, i.e., the Iranians from developing theirs? Nobody.

In other words, nations become islands unto themselves, and when this happens, all conversations stop replaced by suspicion and fear that eventually leads to devastating national conflict. Everybody becomes insanely polarized with no means or desire to think things out or come together any longer. We now must destroy each other. We must now regress to the tribal instincts of old, because civility and intelligence just hasn't worked.

You can see this mentality growing in America. Just tune into cable news or read the pundits. This is not just a passing fancy, this is the way human beings get ready for another cycle of war, repeating centuries old habits of destroying anyone who is different from them. Its as if a mystical fog descends upon the entire populace putting them into a deep sleep of stupidity, and it's happening right now. We can't deny it. The tipping point of complete insanity is very close.

The old historical Christian - Jew - Muslim conflicts have not been superseded by advanced mentality and understanding. To the contrary, the hatred is still alive, as alive as ever, and just waiting for the fuse to be lit as a Christian America, a Muslim Middle East, and the wild card Israel patiently await a signal to obliterate each other once more.

You know, when we look at mankind, we can't help but look at the stupidity that has historically transpired, and the thoughtlessness and lack of intelligence that is presently going on by conservative hate mongers who are beginning to beat the drums of war by hating Muslims, Mexicans, and anyone who doesn't kowtow to their idiotic ideals. Christians that burn the Qur'ans aren't being cute, they are playing with their own obliteration. Religious zealots have long memories, and hold unending grudges. They will get even.

There are those who whisper war by wanting to increase a military budget thats already twenty times higher than the military budget of any other country. There are those who whisper war by wanting to increase our own nuclear arsenal, dismantle social programs so we have even more money to wage war, build walls on our borders, develop a nationalistic fervor that punishes all but the ones who rigidly adhere to the doctrine of separatism, and pass laws that restrict individual freedoms in lieu of dogmatic obedience.

When we look at all of this, which is so apparent, who wouldn't throw their arms up and say, "Good luck to you Bud. May the mushroom clouds envelope every corner of your tortured mind."

But many of us cannot do this. No matter how hard or inconvenient, no matter how badly we are treated or spoken against, we will be the thorn in the boot of this insane movement toward self annihilation. We will endlessly remind mankind that only love conquers evil, never force.

And why do we fight against war? Because throughout history mankind has been trying to do it with force, and guess what? Here we are back at square one where the tipping point toward hatred, insanity, and all-out warfare is just a millimeter away. The next war won't be watched on TV in our living rooms. With the next war, there will be fallout in our living rooms.

I will now offer a whisper of peace: "May we all find contentment in our spiritual hearts before its too late."

Old axioms are old because they are universally timeless in their truths. I'm reminded of -"The more things change, the more they stay the same." If we took the political situation you just described, and superimposed it over the political climate which existed in 14th-15th-& 16th century Europe, we would find that they matched-up on all the major points- this could be done with any century you choose- Leads us to wonder...... have we learned nothing? Maybe..... I guess time will tell- as it does everything- Thanks E- interesting articulate article- as always- Always- Ella

Thanks Ella. We have learned a great deal about technology, but nothing about ourselves. This is why I manage a meditation center, for inward looking, for until we begin to understand ourselves and our motives, nothing will change. the current t religions have and are short changing our intelligence.

Thanks Jean - we sure are in this together! When we hurt another, it's as if we stub our own toe. It can't be any other way.

I would humbly respect Raymond Rock to right more about meditation and meditation will whisper of peace in the spirit of America in all times to come.

Perhapes it reflects the mood of sad and helpless for many Americans who, because of the recent recession and its huge investment on the neuclear bomb was neutralized by simple human bomb opponets. History has proved that war has brought destrction both sides. Who wins the war was never certain because everything is considered fair game.Living in fear is worse than to face war.

A whisper of peace comes to those who learn to live in times of war with meditation or accept EQUEL rights of other civilization.

Good words G. S. By observing mankind as it is (waring) and writing about that real situation is the only hope, in my opinion, to open some eyes to the stupidity of war, and the ultimate stupidity of going outward toward experience rather than inward toward emptiness. Only open eyes, eyes that have already gained a semblance of wisdom, can see the benefits to meditation.

Thanks Shari. Whether the end is coming for mankind is a mute question, but the end is certainly coming for all of us. Everyone on earth today will be dead in 100 years - or less - for us old timers!

The next war will not be a war, but nation-building: China will want to build a new United States (and in the meantime take all her resources). Geez, haven't you heard?

Seriously, well done, sir.

An interesting read that makes you think about your choices and feelings. Perhaps we are all too predictable, but hopefully we can manage to surprise when we have to.

Thanks Tom. You're right, some break out of their habit karma and blaze new trails toward compassion and love. I hope it becomes an avalanche some day. Imagine; no need for locks. :)

Really nice, E. I often wonder what it will finally take for the world to see the futility of war. I'm sure it will be a "one person at a time" thing, but sometimes that doesn't feel very comforting, being the impatient person I am. :)

I know what you mean. But more and more of us will see what's coming and try to head it off. It's apparent to anyone who studies history at all that when the republicans get in again, their solution to the economy will be cutting social programs that help the poor and middle class, giving the wealthy further tax breaks, and war, because war gets people's minds off their wallets, and war always fattens the wallets of the wealthy. So I never vote republican. Enough of our kids have been killed for political reasons. Enough is enough. Best......e Best......e

War not only gets peoples minds off their wallets, it keeps the fear kicked up. No better way to control people than with fear.

You get it Joyce. I only hope that many others get it before they vote the war mongers into office. Best as always.......e
